My One Term Promise Remains Firm, Four Years Enough to Fix Nigeria – Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has restated his commitment to serve only one term if elected President of Nigeria.

He emphasized that four years is enough to provide the kind of purposeful leadership the country urgently needs.

In a statement released on Sunday, Obi acknowledged the growing distrust Nigerians have toward political promises, noting that many leaders have repeatedly failed to live up to their words.

However, he maintained that his track record in politics proves he is not like the typical Nigerian politician.

“They are judging me by their own standards, where political promises are made to be broken. But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth,” he said.

Obi pointed to historical leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, who made significant contributions within short periods in office.

He said their legacies show that the value of leadership is not in how long one stays in power but in the impact made while in office.

He explained that his vow to serve only one term is a deliberate choice to challenge the widespread practice of African leaders clinging to power.

Reflecting on his time as the governor of Anambra State, Obi said he kept all his campaign promises by focusing on key sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while managing public funds with transparency and prudence.

Obi dismissed recent comments suggesting that anyone promising to serve just one term may need psychiatric evaluation.

He said such remarks highlight the broken state of Nigeria’s political culture rather than any fault in his own intentions.

According to him, if sticking to the Constitution’s four-year renewable term attracts criticism, then it’s the critics who should be questioned.

He assured Nigerians that his promise is not an empty campaign tactic but a firm commitment rooted in principle.

Obi said he does not need an entire lifetime to make a difference, and that 48 months is more than enough to implement real change if a leader is focused, prepared, and accountable.

He outlined his priorities if elected, including addressing insecurity, improving education and healthcare, supporting small businesses, fighting corruption, and transforming Nigeria from a consumption-based to a production-driven economy.

Obi insisted that these are not lofty dreams but realistic goals that can be achieved within a single four-year term.

Ending his statement, he reinforced his commitment to integrity and measurable impact, declaring that a new Nigeria is possible through focused and transparent leadership.
