Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, the founder of the Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church, or SPAC Nation, has referred to popular singer David Adeleke, also known as Davido, as a gospel artist.
Speaking on the Off the Record podcast, which went viral on Monday, Adegboyega stated that “gospel” means “good news,” which he believes Davido epitomises through his music.
The flamboyant pastor made the statements in response to criticism of his decision to invite secular musicians rather than gospel performers to his recent birthday party.
Adegboyega also discussed his strong friendship with Nigerian artist Zlatan, whom he referred to as his “son.”
He narrated, “Gospel implies good news. Everyone there is a gospel artist. Davido is a gospel artist. Have you heard the phrase, “Because I stand strong?”
He defended his choice of performers, saying, “What I had then were my friends—friends who are there through thick and thin. Davido stated, ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They are my friends. I did not pay for any of them. They adore me, and I will offer my pals platforms.
He chastised gospel performers for judging his decisions rather than fostering relationships.
“If gospel musicians aren’t my friends and instead join the bandwagon to criticise me by asking, ‘Is it a church?’ What shall I do? Drag them by a rope?
“My pals will be there. Everybody in that room was my friend. Zlatan is like a son to me; his kids are my children, and his parents live in my home. So should I now say, ‘Well, because you are not gospel singers, let me hunt for some gospel artists who criticise me and force them to sing?’
Adegboyega insisted that his friends will always take central stage at his events, saying,
