TikTok has issued a notification to users confirming its cessation of operations in the United States.
The company is actively working to reinstate service as expeditiously as possible, collaborating with the incoming President Trump.
Apple and Google have concurrently removed the TikTok application from their respective app stores, the App Store, and the Play Store.
Furthermore, CapCut, a ByteDance-owned video editing application, is also currently unavailable in the United States and has been removed from the App Store.
The TikTok ban is now officially in effect.
The following is the complete text of the initial notification sent to TikTok users at approximately 9:00 PM ET:
Important update from TikTok.
“We regret that a U.S. law banning TikTok will take effect on January 19 and force us to make our services temporarily unavailable.
We’re working to restore our service in the U.S. as soon as possible, and we appreciate your support. Please stay tuned.”
At 22:30 ET, TikTok service was officially discontinued in the United States. Upon application launch, the following message will be displayed.
“A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.
We are optimistic that President Trump’s expressed willingness to collaborate on a solution to reinstate TikTok upon assuming office will prove fruitful. Further updates will be forthcoming.
The shutdown decision follows ByteDance’s failure to comply with U.S. legislation mandating the sale of the app or facing a federal ban.
ByteDance’s nine-month deadline to divest TikTok expires tonight. The U.S. Supreme Court’s affirmation of the law on Friday concludes all legal avenues of appeal.
Is there a possibility of President Trump intervening to prevent the TikTok ban?
Significant political factors are influencing the situation in the United States. The ban’s implementation is scheduled for January 19th, the final day of President Biden’s term.
President Trump’s inauguration is on Monday; however, the Biden administration has deferred enforcement to the incoming Trump administration, despite the law’s effective date remaining Sunday.
In a recent NBC News interview, Trump stated that a 90-day extension for TikTok is highly probable.
“I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at.
The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. You know, it’s appropriate.
We have to look at it carefully. It’s a very big situation,” Trump said in the phone interview. “If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.
In an internal memo on Saturday night (obtained by The Verge), TikTok told its employees that it is optimistic about the app’s future under Trump:
“We know this is disappointing for you not only as employees, but as users.
However, we are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office.
Please know our teams are working tirelessly to bring our app back to the U.S. as soon as possible.”
