Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio strongly disputed the accusations against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying they were politically driven and not based on facts.
Akpabio said the charges came up after Natasha Akpoti’s Senate seat and committee assignment were changed. This makes it seem like Akpoti’s claims were a response to these changes.
Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio strongly denied the accusations against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying they were politically driven and not based on facts.
Akpabio said the charges came up after Natasha Akpoti’s Senate seat and committee assignment were changed. This makes it seem like Akpoti’s claims were a response to these changes.
Akpabio said at an event on Saturday to honour International Women’s Day that the accusations were false and meant to hurt his image.
“I didn’t know until yesterday that what we were talking about only happened when someone switched seats.” It wasn’t until after the seat and committee changes—which my senators know can happen sometimes—that all hell broke loose, and all kinds of accusations were made.
The president of the Senate said that the claimed event happened on December 8, 2023, the day before his birthday.
He said that neither he nor his wife nor any other Nigerian had heard any charges. He wondered why the accusations came up months after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s committee had been moved.
“This is said to have happened on December 8, 2023, which was the day before my birthday and was celebrated at the stadium.” From December 8, 2023, until her committee and place were changed, he said, neither my wife nor I heard of any sexual harassment. Not a single Nigerian did either. Not even her husband had heard of any.
Following her six-month suspension from the Senate, Natasha Akpoti’s claims have sparked widespread debate. But Akpabio said that similar claims she had made in the past had also not been proven.
“Have you ever thought about how that woman would have hurt the other people she has accused in the past?” So far, none of them have been proven. Do you think about how painful this was for the 10th Senate and how it made the Senate look with all these false claims? Akpabio asked a question.
The President of the Senate also supported his honesty by saying that he had worked with many women over the years and had never done anything wrong.
“Look at these lovely women. They have come across me so many times. Did I ever bother any of you? “Or does that person think you’re not pretty?” He asked.
His comments come amid growing backlash over Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, with critics questioning whether the disciplinary action was fair.
