Segun Sowunmi Urged Peter Obi to Return to PDP Ahead of 2027 Elections

As Nigeria begins to gear up for the 2027 general elections, Segun Sowunmi, a key member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has advised former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, to return to the PDP to boost his chances in the next presidential race.

Sowunmi, who previously served as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, made this suggestion during his appearance on Seun Okinbaloye’s Mic On Podcast over the weekend.

Looking ahead, Sowunmi said that the PDP would keep its doors open to all interested candidates. “The PDP will announce when nomination forms are available, and anyone confident enough can contest,” he said.

He added, “If I were Peter Obi, I would rejoin the PDP and push for the presidential ticket. I think it’s time he came back. This party was first formed in the bedroom of the late Alex Ekwueme. So, I don’t see why the Igbo leaders, southern politicians, and other top voices in the PDP can’t come together and say, ‘We recognise this – let’s give him the ticket.’”

The call for Peter Obi to return to PDP comes amid growing discussions about coalition building and political strategy ahead of 2027. Obi, who ran on the Labour Party’s platform in the 2023 election, surprised many by winning over six million votes—despite lacking the backing of powerful governors or a large party network.

Sowunmi believes that if Obi had the support of a well-established party like the PDP, he could perform even better in future elections.

“We’ve made political inroads into every region of the country, but we haven’t had a major candidate from the South-East yet. If Peter Obi brings his energy, followers, and numbers into the PDP and gets the presidential ticket, I can boldly say he would win the South-East, South-South, the Christian North, and North Central,” Sowunmi explained.

He was quick to clarify, however, that his comments were based on his personal opinion and not a sign of any formal talks between Peter Obi and the PDP leadership.

Peter Obi, a former PDP member, left the party in 2022 to run for president under the Labour Party. His campaign attracted strong youth support and energized a significant section of Nigerian voters, particularly young people who were seeking a shift from traditional politics.

While Sowunmi’s comments are sparking conversations in political circles, Obi has yet to respond publicly or give any hint about his political plans for 2027.
