2027 General Elections: It is a Battle Between Nigerians vs Tinubu – PDP

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the upcoming vote is no longer just a normal contest between political parties, but a clear test of the Nigerian people’s frustration and desire for change.

During an event held in Abuja on Thursday, PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, presented the Certificate of Return to Chief Ezenwafor Jude, the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.

However, Damagum used the event to speak about the bigger picture—the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

“This election in 2027 is not about how many governors you have or how many leaders. It’s about Tinubu and Nigerians,” Damagum said.

According to him, the real contest is not between parties or politicians, but between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the everyday Nigerian struggling under economic hardship.

He described the current situation in Nigeria as one where citizens are battling to survive each day. Damagum urged voters to view the 2027 elections as their chance to speak out and demand better governance.

“The ordinary man is feeling the pain, and the decision is his. So I want to use this opportunity to tell Nigerians that it is their election. It is APC versus Nigerians,” he added.

He stressed that the hardships people are facing didn’t just happen by accident, but were created by poor decisions and leadership. He called on all Nigerians to come together and “rescue ourselves from this hardship that is inflicted on us by design, not by any coincidence.”

These remarks come at a time when the PDP is facing internal challenges, including the recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP state executive council to the ruling APC.

Speaking on the defection, Damagum expressed sadness and disappointment, especially given how much support the party had given Delta State over the years.

“It’s very sad and unfortunate because to me, if there’s any state that should think that way, not Delta, because the party is very magnanimous,” he said. He also noted that those who left did not mention any wrongdoing by the party.

“They didn’t say the party did anything wrong to them, only good. So their decision must be personal. But the pain will remain with us,” he added.

Damagum reminded the public that the PDP has supported Delta State through thick and thin, including backing the emergence of the current governor and supporting Okowa as the party’s vice presidential candidate in 2023.

“I think we’ve done it all for them in Delta State. We least expected this action from them,” he said.
Despite the setback, Damagum maintained that the PDP remains strong and will continue to stand firm.

“All the same, this is a party that has seen more than that, but it’s still standing,” he concluded.

As the 2027 general elections in Nigeria draw nearer, the PDP is pushing a message that goes beyond politics. It’s calling on Nigerians to see the vote as a chance to stand up for themselves and demand real change from those in power.
