Labour Party Suspends Governor Alex Otti and Five Others 

The Labour Party has announced the indefinite suspension of six high-ranking members, including Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for alleged anti-party activities.

The decision, which takes immediate effect, was made after a five-member disciplinary committee completed its investigation and submitted its findings to the party leadership.

Other suspended members are Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha, along with House of Representatives members Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowumi.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, and signed by the Labour Party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) met and approved the committee’s recommendations.

The statement reads:
“Recall that on Friday, May 2, 2025, the NEC of the Labour Party set up a five-man Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi (Deputy National Chairman), with Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim and three others, to investigate Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and other party members accused of working against the party’s interests.

“The committee has completed its task and submitted its report. After thorough discussion, the NEC ratified the committee’s recommendations. As a result, the following individuals have been suspended from the Labour Party and all related activities, with immediate effect and indefinitely: Dr. Alex Otti,Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowumi”

The Labour Party also responded to questions about why Nenadi Usman’s name was not on the suspension list. According to the statement, Usman is not a registered member of the Labour Party but a supporter of its 2023 presidential candidate. The party stated that she belongs to the “Obidient” support group and is therefore not eligible for any party sanction.

The party went further to criticize Usman, accusing her of lacking the moral standing to speak on corruption matters. It referenced her alleged plea bargain with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and raised questions about her properties and businesses, including a radio station in Kaduna and companies in Cameroon.

“Ms. Usman lacks the moral capacity to initiate or even talk about corruption-related issues,” the party’s statement added.

On the issue of political mergers, the Labour Party clearly stated that it has no intention of joining any coalition or alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Labour Party will contest the 2027 general elections independently. There will be no merger or alliance, and no further discussion will be held on this matter,” the statement concluded.
