Simon Ekpa Faces Terrorism Charges in Finland 

Simon Njoku Ekpa, a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is currently facing serious terrorism-related charges in a Finnish court.

The case, which has attracted international attention, involves accusations that Ekpa used his influence and online platforms to incite violence in Nigeria.

Although the Finnish National Prosecution Authority did not mention Ekpa by name in its official statement, the country’s public broadcaster, YLE, confirmed his identity. 

Prosecutors stated that a Finnish citizen had been charged for “public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent” and “participating in the activities of a terrorist group.”

The alleged crimes took place in the city of Lahti between 2021 and 2024. They are believed to be linked to efforts to create an independent Biafra state, separate from Nigeria.

Ekpa, who also holds Finnish citizenship, has denied all charges. He remains in custody as the case proceeds. He has previously identified himself as the Prime Minister of a so-called “Biafra Government in Exile.”

Back in November 2024, Ekpa was arrested along with four others. However, charges against the other individuals were later dropped due to insufficient evidence.

According to Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the District Court of Päijät-Häme found enough grounds to detain Ekpa on suspicion of encouraging crimes with terrorist motives.

The ministry said he had allegedly used social media to promote separatist messages, call for violence, and encourage illegal actions, which they claim caused unrest in Nigeria’s South-East region.

“Investigators also linked Ekpa to violent incidents in Nigeria believed to be influenced by his online campaigns,” the ministry explained.

His arrest came after repeated diplomatic efforts by the Nigerian government, which had raised concerns with Finland about his activities and their impact on peace in the country.

The issue was also discussed during official meetings between the two nations, prompting Finland to take legal steps against him.

In January 2025, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed appreciation to the Finnish government for taking action.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa while receiving the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin, President Tinubu emphasized that the Nigerian government would not support any behavior or statements that could lead to division.

He said, “I must thank you for your efforts in supporting the rule of law and safeguarding human rights in Nigeria through the trial of Simon Ekpa. Nigeria is one country, and we’ve been through many challenges. We are focused on unity and peace, not terrorism.”

President Tinubu, who described himself as a lifelong advocate for justice, stressed the importance of national stability and unity. “We need to work together to develop our country. The rule of law protects our democracy, values, and morals, and it must be respected,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of IPOB, is still facing charges related to treason in a separate case being heard in Abuja.

As the trial continues, many are closely watching the outcome of the Simon Ekpa terrorism charges and their implications for both Nigeria and Finland.
