UK Court Jails 47-Year-Old Nigerian Health Worker For S3xual Assault On Patient

A 47-year-old carer, Adewale Kudabo, at York Hospital, who sexually assaulted a patient, has been sentenced to prison.

Prosecutor Henry Fernandez stated that the offenses occurred while Kudabo was employed as a healthcare worker at York Hospital.

Judge Alex Menary remarked that Kudabo had “betrayed the trust” given to him as a healthcare professional.

The York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees York Hospital, expressed its “sincere apologies” to the victim and mentioned that Kudabo left his position shortly after the incidents.

Mr. Fernandez indicated that Kudabo, 47, was assigned to assist a resident experiencing significant pain.

He noted that the offenses were not associated with the bathing procedure but with what transpired afterward.

After completing the patient’s bath, Mr. Fernandez reported that Kudabo leaned down and kissed her.

Despite being in considerable pain, the victim managed to move away slightly but could not wholly avoid the kiss, according to Mr. Fernandez.

He added that she was left feeling confused and uncomfortable by the event.

A few days following the incident, Mr. Fernandez stated that Kudabo asked the victim if she wanted another “bed bath” and again attempted to kiss her.

The victim tried to “get away,” Mr. Fernandez noted but was unable to prevent Kudabo from kissing her on the lips for a second time.

He mentioned that the victim later informed the authorities about the incident.

The court was told that the offenses resulted in the victim suffering from anxiety and experiencing flashbacks related to the events with Kudabo at the hospital.

Kudabo, residing at Count De Burgh Terrace in South Bank, York, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault on the first day of his trial in April.

Judge Menary stated that the victim had “trusted” Kudabo and told him: “You exploited that trust.”

On Tuesday (June 10), he sentenced Kudabo to one year in prison and indicated that he must serve half of the sentence before being eligible for release.

The judge expressed that the severity of the offenses warranted an immediate prison sentence.

Defense attorney Jerry Sodipe mentioned that Kudabo, who has no prior convictions, had expressed remorse for his behaviour.

“He has acknowledged his guilt – he admits he should not have done that,” the defense lawyer stated.

Mr. Sodipe remarked that Kudabo was “moved to sympathy” because of the victim’s pain, believing he was offering her comfort by kissing her.

However, Mr. Sodipe acknowledged that Kudabo realized his actions were “inappropriate and unacceptable.”

Mr. Sodipe also noted that Kudabo had relocated to the UK from Nigeria with his family for work but has now lost his job.

Following the hearing, a York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson stated: “We extend our sincere apologies to the impacted patient.

“Patients should always feel safe and respected while under our care, and we are deeply sorry that this was not the case.

“We responded promptly and decisively, and the individual involved departed from our employment soon afterward.”
