Peter Obi Supporters Cancel Birthday Fundraiser After Public Backlash

A fundraising campaign launched by Peter Obi supporters for a national rally has been cancelled after Nigerians questioned its purpose and how donations would be handled.

The group had earlier shared account numbers for people to donate funds in support of the rally, which was scheduled to mark Peter Obi’s birthday on July 19. The donation accounts were reportedly managed by Serah Ibrahim, Ezeokoli Blessing, and John Alor.

But the move sparked strong criticism online, with many raising concerns about accountability and asking why money was needed for a birthday rally.

In response to the backlash, the organisers decided to suspend the fundraising and issued a public apology.

A statement released on Tuesday, signed by key members of the movement — National Coordinator Yunusa Tanko, Director of Mobilisation Morris Monye, and Director of Media Nana Kazaure — admitted that the fundraising was poorly communicated.

“We have received feedback and concerns regarding the recent announcement of donation accounts for the July 19 rally as a birthday celebration for H.E. Peter Obi,” the statement read.

“We acknowledge that the release of donation account details and communication without adequate context may have created confusion and raised concerns. We take full responsibility for that and we sincerely apologise too. Allocate your resources and lend a helping hand to those in need.”

The group explained that the rally was not meant to be a typical birthday celebration. Instead, they said the event was titled “From Compassion to Purpose: Obidients in Action for a New Possible Nigeria.”

The aim, they noted, was to create a moment of reflection, inspire civic participation, and recommit to the values of good governance and nation-building.

The decision to cancel the fundraising appears to be a move to maintain the trust and unity of the Obidient movement, which has played a strong role in Nigeria’s recent political scene. Many supporters praised the organisers for listening to public concerns and choosing transparency.

Although the donation drive has been cancelled, the organisers still plan to go ahead with the rally just without public fundraising. They called on Nigerians to support the cause in their own way by helping others and standing for a better Nigeria.
