I Will Serve Only One Term If Elected President in 2027 – Rotimi Amaechi
Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has announced that he will serve only one term if elected president in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Amaechi made this known during an interview on Politics Today, a political programme on Channels Television hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.
According to the former Rivers State governor, his decision to run for just one term is based on the need to protect Nigeria’s fragile political balance between the North and South.
He explained that since President Bola Tinubu, a southerner, would have completed four years by 2027, another southerner can only stay for one term before the presidency returns to the North. This, he said, follows an “unwritten agreement” of rotating power between the two regions.
“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must stick to that unwritten agreement that says South eight years, North eight years,” Amaechi stated.
He also reminded Nigerians how he once stood against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan.
He said that the PDP had broken an earlier agreement on power rotation, and he felt it was unfair and harmful to the country’s unity.
“I led the fight against the PDP government because there was an agreement that power would return to the North.
But the government refused to keep it, and I stood against that,” he said. “Just like then, I now believe the South must also complete its turn before handing over to the North.”
When asked if he would truly serve only one term if elected president, Amaechi confirmed clearly, “Of course.”

He added that Nigerians know him as someone who says what he means and doesn’t make promises he can’t keep.
“Nigerians know I speak my mind. Nigerians know that what I cannot do, I will not say,” he stated.
Amaechi also criticised President Tinubu’s government, saying that things have become harder for everyday Nigerians since he took office.
Recently, Amaechi and other opposition leaders chose the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their new political platform to challenge the current government in the 2027 elections.
