The Lagos State Government has officially renamed the well-known Charly Boy Bus Stop in Bariga to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop, honouring Nigerian music star and Bariga native, Olamide Adedeji.

The announcement was made during the commissioning of several local projects in the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) last Friday.

The outgoing LCDA chairman, Hon. Kolade David Alabi, shared the new changes as one of his final duties before leaving office.

In response to the news, veteran entertainer Charly Boy, whose real name is Charles Oputa, simply told Daily Post, “Na dem sabi,” showing he wasn’t particularly moved by the decision.

Aside from renaming Charly Boy Bus Stop to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop, several other roads and streets in Bariga were also renamed in honour of Nigerian entertainers and public figures. Here’s a summary of the changes:

  • Ilaje Road is now King Sunny Ade Road, honouring the legendary Juju musician.
  • Bariga Road becomes Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way, named after Nigeria’s president and former Lagos governor.
  • Community Road, Akoka is now Babajide Sanwo-Olu Road, for the current Lagos State Governor.
  • Ajidagan Street has been changed to Olamide Adedeji (Baddo) Street.
  • Ifeanyi Street is now Abolore Akande (9ice) Street, for singer 9ice.
  • Ayodele Street, Ladi-Lak is now Tony Tetuila Street, honouring the Afro-pop artist.
  • Ilojo Crescent, Obanikoro is now Bukayo Saka Street, after the Nigerian-British footballer playing for Arsenal and England.

These changes have sparked mixed reactions online. Some users on X (formerly Twitter) feel the decision is politically motivated or historically inaccurate.

A user named Ola claimed the original name of the area was actually Second Pedro Bus Stop, not Charly Boy Bus Stop, arguing that the new naming ignores local history.

Another user, AKIN OMO AKIN, alleged that Charly Boy had named the bus stop after himself without approval from the government.

On the other hand, some users supported the change. One comment said, “Baddo is kuku greater than Charly wayray and his entire generation anyway,” praising the rapper’s influence.
