U.S. Warns Against Birth Tourism Says Pregnant Women May Be Denied Visas

The United States government has issued a clear warning to travelers: using a tourist visa with the plan to give birth in the U.S. is not allowed.

This action is part of a larger effort to stop birth tourism in the U.S., a growing practice where people from other countries visit just to have their baby on American soil so the child can become a U.S. citizen.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria shared this update on their official social media pages on Monday, July 28. 

The statement read, “Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted. Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”

Birth tourism refers to when a person travels to the United States mainly to give birth, so the baby automatically becomes a citizen.

While U.S. law gives citizenship to nearly all babies born on U.S. soil, entering the country under false reasons can break immigration rules.

According to the U.S. Department of State, consular officers (the people who review visa applications) are now told to reject any visa request if they believe the main purpose of the trip is to give birth in the U.S.

This means they will look carefully at applications from pregnant women and may ask more questions to understand the true reason for the visit.

The U.S. government is reminding all visa applicants to be truthful about their reasons for traveling.

If a person lies or hides the real reason for the trip, it could lead to more than just a denied visa it may also create long-term problems with entering the U.S. in the future.
