The man detained for killing a monkey in the hamlet confessed in a viral video that he has lived in Awka for 24 years and was aware that killing and eating monkeys is forbidden in the culture.
He claimed that he did not intend to kill the monkey; instead, he set a trap in the bush, hoping to catch other bush meat. Instead, he captured a monkey.
He begged for forgiveness, saying, “I know what I did; please don’t kill me, but you can take me wherever you want.”
The indigenous people eventually consented to spare his life but warned him that the group would take steps to please the god of the land to avoid penalties.
