Feeling buried under work? Well, that’s overwork!
Introduction
Trust me, that constant pressure to do more and do it faster can leave you drained and stressed. But before you throw in the towel, there are strategic ways to take back control and reclaim your time.
5 Strategic Ways to Deal with Overwork
Here are 5 superstar strategies to help you manage your workload and conquer overwork:
1. Prioritize your tasks
This issue of overwork happens to almost everyone; trust me, it’s something that most of us have been through. I do remember this feeling that my to-do list is a monster that I can never defeat. Do you want to know the trick I used to defeat it? I know your answer is “yes.” Now, this is what you are going to do: make a plan to tackle it!
First, I will like you to pick out the most important things—I mean, what absolutely has to get done today. Write down all those things. After writing it down, are you still feeling overwhelmed by a big task?
Now I want you to break it down into smaller, easier chunks. This will make it seem less scary and help you focus on one thing at a time. Now, schedule some time in your calendar to actually do these things. Treat it like an important appointment!
2. Set boundaries between your work and your personal life
From experience, I can clearly say that work can easily take over our lives if care is not taken. But having a healthy work-life balance is key to avoiding burnout and all the other negative effects of overworking on your mental health.
Your work life and your personal life are like two circles; in order to have a good balance, the circles shouldn’t overlap too much. This means setting some rules for yourself, like turning off work emails at night or not working on weekends (it’s for the best). Sometimes, it’s okay to say no to extra work so that you can have time for the things you enjoy outside of work.
3. Take a break
Most people often think taking breaks means they will not be able to cover the volume of work they might cover, but that’s not true! Short breaks are actually good for you! It’s okay to get up and move around, grab a drink, or chat with a friend for a few minutes. Stepping away for a bit can help you focus better when you get back to work. Feeling fancy? Try this: work for 25 minutes, then take a short 5-minute break. Repeat! You might be surprised at how much you can accomplish in short bursts of focused work.
4. Stop Multitasking
I want you to look into the issue of multitasking this way: you are trying to juggle three balls at once. It’s really hard to keep all the balls in the air, right? That’s exactly what multitasking is like for your brain. It gets stressful and confusing, and you end up dropping all the balls (or making mistakes in your work). Instead, try focusing on one ball at a time. Give your full attention to the task at hand, and you’ll do a much better job. When you’re finished with that task, you can move on to the next one.
5. Automate Task
Technology can be of great help these days. All those boring, repetitive tasks you do all the time, you can simply let your computer do them for you. See if you can set up automatic emails, like birthday wishes or meeting reminders. You can also schedule social media posts in advance, so you don’t have to think about it every day. There are even tools that can help you keep your projects organized, like a digital filing cabinet. Let your tech tools do the legwork, and watch those extra minutes pile up so you can use them for something more fun!
