Buhari Calls for Peace in Gaza to Honour Pope Francis’s Final Wish
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has joined the global Christian community in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday.

In a heartfelt tribute, Buhari described the late pope as a passionate voice for the poor, the weak, and displaced people around the world.
Buhari mourns Pope Francis with deep respect, recognizing his lifelong dedication to humanitarian work, religious harmony, and global peace. The tribute, shared through Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, praised Pope Francis as a man of compassion and courage who used his position to uplift those in need.
“Christians in Nigeria and around the world will miss the Pope’s example of service, his love for the poor, and his concern for migrants and refugees,” Buhari said.
Pope Francis was known for reaching out to people across religious lines. Buhari acknowledged this effort, saying, “He was a Pope who worked to create a meaningful and respectful relationship between the followers of the world’s two biggest religions; Islam and Christianity.”
Buhari also mentioned the pope’s last appeal for peace in the Middle East. Just hours before his passing, Pope Francis had called for an end to the violence in Gaza. The former president expressed hope that both Israel and Hamas would honor the Pope’s final message by working toward peace.
He said, “The Pope’s final appeal was for an end to the war in Gaza. I pray both sides will respect this wish as a tribute to the Pope, who not only brought climate change to the Vatican’s agenda but also boldly recognized the State of Palestine.”
