On Tuesday, April 18, a 19-year-old boy named Abass Enitan was sentenced to nine months imprisonment with no option of a fine for vandalizing a police station cell toilet window in an attempt to escape.
The verdict was delivered by Magistrate M. C. Ayinde of the Ikeja magistrates’ court. Enitan was accused of willful damage and unlawful attempt to flee custody.
According to the prosecutor, Insp Segun Oke, the defendant committed the crime on April 3 at the Abattoir Police Station in Agege, Lagos, after stealing a ram worth N150,000 belonging to Mr Bisola Olusanya. Enitan, who was locked up at the police station, broke the toilet window in an effort to escape, in violation of sections 339 and 406 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Magistrate Ayinde stated that the sentence would serve as a warning to others.
