Drama in court as a serial house breaker /burglar standing trial on two separate cases changes clothes so as to conceal identity.
There was a shock at an Abeokuta Magistrate Court on Friday, 28th February 2025, when an alleged serial house breaker, burglar, robber, and thief using two different names was standing trial for separate cases, changed clothes before appearing for a second trial in the same court and before the same Magistrate.
The man is an ex-convict who has always been breaking into people’s houses and stealing properties belonging to other people. The culprit, at times, robbed people in a lone and deserted street by snatching bags and mobile phones or, at times, pretending to the POS operator that he wanted to withdraw money, and he would forcefully hijack the POS operator’s purse and run away with the cash.
This culprit knows a lot about dealing with burglary, stealing, and robbing people since he shuttles his name between Yusuf Salako and Gbenga Salako.
At times, he uses Yusuf Gbenga, and whenever he is arrested for another crime, he twists the name to Gbenga Salako. The pattern in which he usually breaks into or burgles people’s houses is always the same. He mostly targets houses where the occupants are not around at the time of his evil act.
He claimed to be a Transformer operator and electrician. So, whenever he broke into any house and could not see any tangible things such as a Laptop Computer, money, jewelry, electronics, or clothes to steal, he would vandalize electric wires and steal the wires and electrical accessories.
The report states that he is well known to many law enforcement officials, including the Police and So-Safe Corps, and he is always being defended by the same lawyer at the Isabo Magistrate Court whenever he is arrested and brought to court.
The incident leading to the drama on Friday happened when he was granted bail for an offense of Housebreaking and Stealing, which he committed at Afaja, off Olorunsogo Ọba road, sometime in 2024, and he is still standing trial on the case.
He used the name Gbenga Salako in the case. His lawyer is said to have always been asking for adjournment, giving different excuses.
Meanwhile, on 23rd February 2025, he was caught in action after breaking into a house at Diamond Estate behind Laderin Abeokuta and stealing 2 laptops, clothes, and money. He was arrested by NSCDC personnel with the help of the community people. He gave his name as Yusuf Salako and was charged to court.
As faith would have it, the case was assigned to the same Court 4, where he had a pending case. He pleaded not guilty as usual, and he was granted bail. His regular lawyer has also always been asking for adjournment.
On 28th March 2025, two different cases he is standing trial for were fixed for hearing. He made the appearance for the case in which he was charged to court by NSCDC using the name Yusuf Salako, and his lawyer asked for adjournment on 2nd April 2025.
When another case was called in which he bears Gbenga Salako, everyone in the courtroom was shocked as he appeared wearing new clothes and trying to conceal his identity. Immediately he entered the box, his lawyer, in his usual manner, asked for adjournment again.
At this point, the NSCDC prosecutor called the attention of the court to know that it was the same person charged to court by NSCDC, so the one who had dramatically changed clothes and appeared for another case using another name.
The court then adjourned the case to 4th April definitely for trial.
